MILWAUKEE COUNTRY CLUB
🇺🇸 River Hills, WI, USA
Designed by C. H. Alison, Harry S. Colt

Milwaukee Country Club occupies a rolling, wooded property in River Hills, an affluent suburb north of Milwaukee. The course was designed by Harry Colt and Charles Alison in the late 1920s, part of their influential American tour that produced several distinguished layouts in the Midwest. The design reflects Colt's characteristic strategic approach, with routing that takes advantage of natural elevation changes and mature tree corridors that define playing corridors without excessive narrowness.
The layout features classic Golden Age principles: thoughtfully positioned bunkers that reward accurate play, greens with subtle internal contours, and holes that offer multiple routes depending on skill and conditions. The property's topography provides variety, with some holes playing across hillsides and others through flatter, parkland terrain. Several holes incorporate natural drainage features and wooded edges that frame shots without dominating play.
Milwaukee Country Club has maintained its position as one of Wisconsin's most established private clubs since its founding. The membership has historically included prominent Milwaukee business and civic leaders, and the club culture emphasizes both golf tradition and family programming. The course has hosted regional amateur competitions and USGA qualifiers over the decades, though it has not been a major championship venue.
The club completed restoration work in recent years to recapture original Colt-Alison design elements that had been softened or altered over time, returning bunker shapes and green contours closer to the architects' intent while accommodating modern maintenance practices and playing expectations.
Reviews
A walk back in time. CH Alison was a protege of Harry Colt & Dr. Alister McKenzie, and their influence shows tremendously on this beautiful piece of property rolling along the Milwaukee River. A must-play for a Golden Age buff.
Milwaukee CC is the top ranked private course with the most exclusive membership in Wisconsin. The course conditions are always great. The course layout to me is very old school and right in front of you. However not that memorable. The holes on the river are very scenic and hole 9 back up to the club house is fun. MCC is a classic old school club with a lot of rules for guests and a fun course to play but not in my top 10 in Wisconsin with all the world class public courses here.
My first CH Alison designed course. The changed by Tom Doak’s firm are great. Some great bunkering and interesting use of mounding. This club has a fantastic caddie program and there conditioning is top notch. A gem in Milwaukee.
Lucky to have played several times, course is immaculate. Probably the fastest greens I have played. Locker room is one of the best in golf. This place has it all.
This club nails everything. Clubhouse, locker room, food, course, service…it’s a dream. Course does not have a bad hole and is immaculate. Escaping TX heat in mid summer wasn’t bad either.
This place is my personal Disneyland. Great vibes. Cool locker room, great showers. Incredible members golf course. Introduced me to CH Alison. 8-13 may be my favorite stretch in golf.
