THE WISLEY
🏴 Woking, Surrey, England
Designed by Robert Trent Jones, Jr.
The Wisley opened in 1991 as a private members' club on a former estate near Woking in Surrey, roughly twenty-five miles southwest of London. Robert Trent Jones, Jr. designed two eighteen-hole courses for the property: the Church Course and the Mill Course. The Mill takes its name from the historic mill buildings that once stood on the site, and the routing makes use of the gently rolling Surrey heathland terrain interspersed with mature woodland and water features that characterize the landscape.
Jones's design for the Mill Course incorporates strategic bunkering and water hazards on several holes, requiring thoughtful course management rather than pure length. The layout moves through a mix of open and tree-lined corridors, with elevation changes that are modest but sufficient to create variety in stance and perspective. The sandy subsoil typical of this part of Surrey provides good drainage and firm playing conditions for much of the year, a quality shared with the more famous heathland courses in the Woking area.
The Wisley operates as a traditional private club with a full calendar of member competitions and social events. The clubhouse facilities include formal and informal dining areas that overlook the courses, and the club maintains a reputation for attentive service and well-kept grounds. While the Mill Course does not host professional tournaments or appear on major rankings lists, it serves as a solid complement to the Church Course and provides members with two distinct routing options on the same property.
