MIDLAND COUNTRY CLUB
🇺🇸 Midland, TX, USA
Designed by Dick Nugent, Ralph Plummer, Ron Kirby

Midland Country Club sits in the oil-rich Permian Basin of West Texas, where the flat to gently rolling terrain and arid climate shape the character of the course. The club was originally designed by Ralph Plummer, a Texas-based architect active in the mid-twentieth century who routed numerous courses across the state's challenging landscapes. Later renovations by Dick Nugent and Ron Kirby have updated the layout while respecting the original bones, addressing modern playing standards and turf management needs in this demanding environment.
The course reflects the practical realities of West Texas golf: wide fairways accommodate the persistent wind that sweeps across the plains, and strategic bunkering defines playing corridors on relatively open ground. Water features, where present, serve both aesthetic and irrigation purposes in a region where every drop counts. The routing takes advantage of subtle elevation changes that might go unnoticed elsewhere but provide welcome variety in the flat expanse of the Permian Basin.
Midland Country Club serves as a social and recreational anchor for the city's business and civic community, historically tied to the energy industry that built the region. The club maintains traditions common to established Texas country clubs, where golf is part of a broader family and social experience. The course offers a straightforward test suited to the climate and landscape, demanding accuracy in the wind and patience with firm, fast conditions that define golf in this part of Texas.
Reviews
Absolutely love this course. The course is challenging, fair, varied, and keeps your attention the whole round. When the wind blows (it usually does), it gets extra interesting! ‘23 TX Mid Am was out here and the club really rolled out the red carpet for us. Par 3 course was also really fun.
