MIDDELBURG COUNTRY CLUB
🇿🇦 Middelburg, Mpumalanga, ZA
Designed by Gary Player
Middelburg Country Club sits in the Mpumalanga Highveld town of Middelburg, roughly midway between Johannesburg and Nelspruit in South Africa's interior plateau region. Gary Player designed the course, which occupies gently rolling terrain characteristic of the highveld grasslands. The layout reflects Player's approach to working with natural landforms while creating strategic variety across the routing.
The course serves a regional membership drawn from Middelburg's agricultural and industrial community, including workers from nearby coal mining and steel production operations that anchor the local economy. The setting offers wide horizons typical of the highveld, with fairways moving through open grassland punctuated by scattered trees and occasional water features. Elevation changes are modest but sufficient to create visual interest and affect club selection.
As with many Player designs in South Africa's interior, the course emphasizes accuracy over distance, with strategic bunkering and water hazards positioned to challenge approach shots. The conditioning reflects the climate of the region—warm summers with afternoon thunderstorms and mild, dry winters when the kikuyu grass goes dormant. Middelburg Country Club functions as a traditional community golf facility, providing a recreational and social center for the town and surrounding farming districts.
