The Mesquite Course at Kierland Golf Club opened in 1996 as part of a 27-hole facility designed by Scott Miller in north Scottsdale. The Mesquite nine forms one-third of this routing, sharing the property with the Ironwood and Acacia nines. The course occupies relatively flat desert terrain characteristic of the Scottsdale area, with the layout incorporating native Sonoran Desert vegetation including the namesake mesquite trees, saguaro cacti, and various desert scrub. The design reflects the target-golf style common to desert courses of this era, where defined landing areas and greens are framed by natural desert waste areas. Water features appear on several holes, adding strategic elements to what is otherwise a desert parkland setting.
