COSTA MESA COUNTRY CLUB
🇺🇸 Costa Mesa, CA, USA
Designed by Ron Fream, William Francis Bell

Mesa Linda at Costa Mesa Country Club occupies a compact site in Orange County, California, where William F. Bell laid out the original design before Ron Fream contributed later modifications. Bell, a prolific Southern California architect active from the 1950s through the 1970s, designed numerous daily-fee and municipal courses throughout the region, typically working with relatively flat terrain and creating playable layouts for a wide range of golfers. The course reflects this practical design philosophy, fitting golf holes into the urban fabric of Costa Mesa, a city that developed rapidly in the postwar decades as part of the broader Orange County expansion.
The routing works within the constraints of its setting, with holes that generally play across modest elevation changes typical of the coastal plain. Mature trees and strategic bunkering provide definition and challenge on a layout where accuracy often matters more than distance. Fream's involvement likely focused on modernizing certain features or adjusting holes to contemporary standards while maintaining the fundamental character of Bell's original work.
Costa Mesa Country Club operates as a semi-private facility, serving both members and outside play in a region with substantial golf demand. The course provides a straightforward test of golf without dramatic terrain features, relying instead on sound hole design and conditioning to create interest. Its location in central Orange County places it within a densely developed area where golf courses increasingly serve as recreational amenities amid residential and commercial growth.
Reviews
Decent course, long rounds but not as bad as its sister course, shorter and less difficult than the other although water comes into play on a couple of holes.
Fun course when it’s actually moving. The pace at Costa Mesa ruins the experience. Some drivable par 4’s for some or at least some fun decisions you get to make.
