MAKAI GOLF CLUB AT PRINCEVILLE
🇺🇸 Princeville, HI, USA
Designed by Robert Trent Jones, Jr.

Makai Golf Club at Princeville unfolds across terrain sculpted by eons of Pacific winds and volcanic activity, a dramatic stage where Jack Nicklaus’s design philosophy took root in the early 1970s. This Hawaiian layout, perched on the northern coastline of Kauai, eschews the traditional parkland mold in favor of a routing that embraces the natural contours of the land. Expect generous fairways flanked by dense tropical foliage, demanding strategic positioning more than brute strength, and greens complexes that reward thoughtful approaches.
Nicklaus returned decades later to further refine his vision, subtly reshaping contours and enhancing the course’s playability while preserving its inherent challenge. The result is a course where the trade winds dictate strategy as much as yardage, where doglegs and elevation changes force players to think creatively. This isn't a course that screams with architectural audacity, yet its appeal lies in its understated elegance and the way it allows the land to dictate the experience.
While it has yet to host a major championship, Makai holds a revered place in the hearts of those who’ve walked its fairways. The club's appeal stems from its exceptional views and the opportunity to test one's game against the backdrop of the Pacific. Legend has it that the course's signature 7th hole, a par-3 that plunges toward the ocean, was originally conceived during a casual conversation between Nicklaus and a local fisherman, inspired by the fisherman's daily view from the cliff's edge. This connection to the community and the natural beauty of Kauai is woven into the fabric of Makai.
Reviews
spectacular conditions for a early january day great views and vistas. overall solid, not a must play
Amazing views
Good times here-not a super challenging or punishing golf course. Lots of fantastic views and chances to score nice and low. Conditions are solid, but not “pristine” or tournament conditions. Definitely make a stop if you love the water and don’t need to take golf too seriously for a day
Makai has some enjoyable holes and is well-maintained, but compared to other notable Hawaiian tracks - like Plantation or even Mauna Lani - it feels more like a convenient “Hawaiian course by the ocean” than a truly standout experience. It’s fun. It’s relatively easy. I played the blues, but next time I’d go with their combo tee setup - a mix of all the boxes that makes the course play at its most interesting. The handful of holes by the water are what bump it up to an 8 for me - a drivable par 4, and an intimidating par 3 with the pin tucked near the cliff. If you’re already on the North Shore, it’s worth a round. If you’re staying down south, no real need to make the drive. Stick to Poipu - unless you want both. Fun fact: Makai supposedly coined the term albatross in golf. If you visit in the winter, you’ll see actual albatross families nesting around the course as they migrate - a pretty special sight even if the golf itself isn’t.
