SHELTER HARBOR GOLF CLUB
🇺🇸 Charlestown, RI, USA
Designed by Dr. Michael Hurdzan
Shelter Harbor, carved into the rolling coastal landscape of Charlestown, Rhode Island, is a testament to understated New England golf. A course that embraces the natural contours rather than overpowering them. Its seaside terrain, with fescue grasses framing fairways that roll and pitch, often dictates approach shots and club selection. Longer hitters are rewarded, but wayward tee shots are quickly punished, especially on the inward nine.
The original design by Geoffrey Cornish and Brian Silva, reflects an era that prioritizes strategic play over sheer length. The course features strategically placed bunkers that subtly guide the player's eye and influence decisions off the tee.
While not a regular stop on professional tours, Shelter Harbor is a celebrated local favorite. The club has quietly cultivated a membership known for its passion for the game and a deep appreciation for the unpretentious atmosphere. Local lore suggests the halfway house clam chowder is a more fiercely guarded secret than any green's undulation.
