ALMENARA GOLF RESORTS
🇪🇸 Sotogrande, Andalucia, ES
Designed by Dave Thomas
Los Lagos is one of two courses at Almenara Golf Resort in Sotogrande, designed by Dave Thomas and opened in the late 1990s as part of the region's golf expansion. The course takes its name from the numerous lakes and water features that define much of the routing, a signature element of Thomas's design approach here. Set inland from the Mediterranean coast, the layout occupies relatively flat terrain compared to some of Sotogrande's hillier venues, allowing for a more walkable experience while still incorporating strategic water hazards throughout.
The design emphasizes accuracy over distance, with water coming into play on more than half the holes. Thomas routed several holes around interconnected lakes, requiring careful club selection and course management rather than pure power. The conditioning typically reflects the resort's commitment to year-round playability, with Bermuda grasses suited to the southern Spanish climate. Mature trees and landscaping have developed since opening, framing fairways and adding definition to the relatively open terrain.
Almenara operates as a resort facility alongside its companion course, Los Pinos, offering accessible golf in the Sotogrande area without the private club restrictions of some neighboring venues. The resort caters to visiting golfers and provides practice facilities and clubhouse amenities typical of modern Spanish golf developments. Los Lagos serves as a solid complement to the region's more famous courses, offering a straightforward test shaped primarily by water hazards and strategic bunkering.
