Loblolly at RTJ Golf Trail at Cambrian Ridge

Loblolly is one of three courses at the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail facility at Cambrian Ridge in Greenville, Alabama. Designed by Robert Trent Jones Sr. with associate Roger Rulewich and opened in the early 1990s as part of Alabama's ambitious public golf trail project, the course takes its name from the loblolly pine, a tree species common throughout the southeastern United States and prevalent in the surrounding landscape.

The routing moves through rolling terrain characteristic of south-central Alabama, with elevation changes that provide variety and strategic interest across the layout. Jones incorporated his signature design elements: large, contoured greens with multiple pin positions, expansive bunker complexes, and water hazards that come into play on several holes. The course stretches to considerable length from the back tees, reflecting Jones's philosophy of offering challenge to accomplished players while remaining accessible from forward tee positions.

Cambrian Ridge sits in a relatively rural setting outside Greenville, a small town in Butler County. The facility's three courses—Loblolly, Canyon, and Sherling—share clubhouse amenities and collectively represent one of the larger golf complexes within the RTJ Trail system. The trail itself was developed through a state pension fund initiative in the 1990s to promote tourism and economic development, bringing championship-caliber public golf to communities across Alabama. Loblolly serves as one component of this broader vision, offering golfers a traditional Jones design experience in the Alabama countryside.
