LIGONIER COUNTRY CLUB
🇺🇸 Ligonier, PA, USA
Designed by Kipp Schulties, Xenophon Hassenplug
Ligonier Country Club sits in the Laurel Highlands of southwestern Pennsylvania, a region known for its rolling terrain and forested ridges. The course was originally designed by Xenophon Hassenplug, a Pittsburgh-based architect active in the early twentieth century who worked on several layouts in western Pennsylvania. More recently, Kipp Schulties undertook renovation work to update the design while respecting its traditional character.
The routing takes advantage of the natural topography, with elevation changes and tree-lined fairways characteristic of mountain courses in this part of the state. The layout moves through a mix of open and wooded areas, requiring thoughtful club selection and course management. Ligonier itself is a small borough with a historic downtown and proximity to notable regional attractions, giving the club a distinctly local and community-oriented feel.
The club serves as a gathering place for members from the surrounding area, with golf as the centerpiece of recreational and social life. The course reflects the unpretentious character common to many established clubs in smaller Pennsylvania towns, where tradition and accessibility matter more than national rankings. For visitors to the Laurel Highlands, Ligonier offers a straightforward round of golf in a pleasant setting, shaped by the region's natural features and the work of architects familiar with the challenges of building on Pennsylvania hillsides.
Reviews
Ligonier is a great small town country club. A lovely par 70 the course has amazing greens and sits on a solid piece of land. The mix of par 3s are incredible and some of the short par 4s on this course are shockingly hard. The greens are varied enough that different pin positions can drastically alter how the hole is played. Everything about this club is cozy, tight knit, and friendly. This is an excellent match play course and the vibes are hard to beat. I give Ligonier my full endorsement.
