THE BIG CATS GOLF COURSE OF OCEAN RIDGE PLANTATION
🇺🇸 Ocean Isle Beach, NC, USA
Designed by Tim Cate

Leopard's Chase, at Ocean Ridge Plantation near Ocean Isle Beach, is the boldest of the Big Cats, a modern layout that demands a confident hand. Carved from former coastal Carolina wetlands, the course presents a strategic test, rewarding thoughtful approaches over brute force. Fairways are generous, allowing for aggressive tee shots, but danger lurks in the form of expansive waste bunkers and cleverly positioned water hazards that protect the large, undulating greens.
Architect Tim Cate brought a distinctive vision to the landscape, using bold bunkering and dramatic elevation changes, unusual for the flat coastal plain, to create a memorable and challenging experience. The course isn't known for hosting major championships, but its challenging design and pristine conditions have garnered a loyal following among discerning golfers in the Carolinas and beyond.
Beyond the course, the spirit of friendly competition thrives. The membership, largely comprised of both year-round residents and seasonal visitors, fosters a welcoming atmosphere. The post-round camaraderie extends beyond the 18th green, with lively debates over the day’s shots often continuing well into the evening over a Low Country boil, a house favorite that perfectly complements the course’s Southern charm.
