LEE VALLEY GOLF AND COUNTRY CLUB
🇮🇪 Ovens, Cork, IE
Designed by Christy O'Connor Jr.
Lee Valley Golf and Country Club occupies a naturally rolling site in Ovens, approximately ten miles west of Cork city in the Lee River valley. Christy O'Connor Jr. designed the course, which opened in the mid-1990s as part of Ireland's golf development boom. The layout takes advantage of the property's elevation changes and mature woodland, with the River Lee and surrounding farmland visible from several elevated tees and greens.
The routing moves through a mix of parkland and more open terrain, with O'Connor's characteristic use of water hazards appearing on multiple holes. Several holes play along ridgelines that offer views across the Cork countryside, while others descend into tree-lined corridors. The design incorporates both strategic and penal elements, with well-bunkered greens and water coming into play on approach shots and around putting surfaces. The back nine generally features more dramatic elevation changes than the front.
Lee Valley serves as a members' club with visitor access and hosts regional amateur competitions. The facility includes practice areas and a clubhouse that overlooks the course and valley beyond. The course represents O'Connor Jr.'s work during a period when he was actively designing throughout Ireland, applying principles he developed both as a touring professional and through his design partnership projects across the country.
