GOLF LE MAÎTRE
🇨🇦 Mont-Tremblant, Québec, CA
Designed by Fred Couples
Le Maître sits within the Mont-Tremblant resort area in Quebec's Laurentian Mountains, approximately ninety miles northwest of Montreal. Designed by Fred Couples and opened in 2000, the course occupies rolling, forested terrain characteristic of the region, with elevation changes and natural corridors carved through mature hardwood and conifer stands. The layout takes advantage of the mountainous topography, offering views across the surrounding valleys and ridges that define this part of the Laurentians.
Couples, working with architect Gene Bates, routed the eighteen holes to incorporate the site's natural movement, with fairways that rise and fall through the forest and greens positioned to emphasize the terrain's contours. The design reflects Couples' playing philosophy—generous landing areas off the tee balanced by approach shots that reward precision, particularly on holes where elevation or green complexes demand careful club selection. Water features appear on several holes, and the bunkering style is relatively understated, allowing the land's natural character to shape strategy.
The course serves as one of two championship layouts at the Mont-Tremblant golf complex, complementing the resort's broader recreational offerings in a region known for both winter sports and summer mountain tourism. Le Maître has hosted regional amateur competitions and remains a centerpiece of golf activity in the Laurentians, drawing players who seek a mountain course experience within reach of Montreal and eastern Ontario.
