THE HILLS OF LAKEWAY
🇺🇸 Austin, TX, USA
Designed by Leon Howard

The Hills of Lakeway features two distinct eighteen-hole layouts in the Texas Hill Country west of Austin: the Lakeway Course and the Live Oak Course. Both were designed by Leon Howard, a Texas-based architect who worked extensively throughout the state during the latter decades of the twentieth century. The property sits along the shores of Lake Travis, one of the Highland Lakes chain created by the damming of the Colorado River, and the courses take advantage of the region's characteristic limestone terrain and elevation changes.
The Hill Country setting provides natural drama through rocky outcroppings, native oak and juniper vegetation, and views across the lake and surrounding hills. The routing on both courses incorporates the area's rolling topography, with holes playing through draws and across ridgelines typical of the region. Water comes into play on several holes given the proximity to Lake Travis, while the rocky soil and elevation shifts create strategic variety in approach play and club selection.
The Hills of Lakeway operates as a semi-private facility serving both members and daily-fee players in the greater Austin area. The club benefits from its location in one of Texas's most scenic golf regions, where the limestone landscape and lake views distinguish courses from the flatter terrain found in other parts of the state. The dual-course layout provides variety for regular play and can accommodate tournaments and outings of different sizes.
Reviews
Another one of the classic courses and part of The Hills country club. Course is typically in solid condition Routing and design is a little funky in my personal opinion. Some really tricky tee shots on certain holes. A mature golf course with large trees lining the fairways. If you are off the beaten path you will end up with some classic “muni” type lies where grass cannot grow underneath the large, mature teees.
