LAKEVIEW GOLF RESORT & SPA
🇺🇸 Morgantown, WV, USA
Designed by James Harrison
Lakeview Golf Resort & Spa sits in the hills surrounding Morgantown, West Virginia, where the Appalachian topography provides natural elevation change and wooded corridors typical of the region. The course was designed by James Harrison, though specific details about the design date and Harrison's broader portfolio are not widely documented in major golf architecture references. The layout works with the rolling terrain common to northern West Virginia, likely incorporating doglegs and elevation shifts that require thoughtful club selection and course management.
The property's resort setting suggests the course serves both destination visitors and local membership, with amenities beyond golf that include spa facilities and lodging. Courses in this part of West Virginia often feature tree-lined fairways with views of the surrounding ridges and valleys, and seasonal changes in the hardwood forests create distinct playing conditions from spring through fall. Water features, whether natural streams or constructed ponds, are common design elements in the region and likely factor into the routing.
Morgantown's position as a college town and regional hub means the course draws from both the local community and travelers to the area. The resort model typically emphasizes playability for a range of skill levels while maintaining enough challenge to keep regular players engaged. Without major tournament history or national rankings to reference, Lakeview functions primarily as a regional amenity, offering mountain golf in a part of the state where the landscape naturally lends itself to interesting holes and scenic variety.
Reviews
A ton of potential with the land the course sits on but in its current state Lakeview is not fun and brutally hard. The majority of the playing corridors are overgrown with huge mature trees to the point of having a 20 yard wide hallway to fit your entire ball flight through. The greens complexes are nearly identical on every hole with a narrow bowling pin shaped green guarded by a bunker front right and front left. As recently as 1974 Golf Digest had Lakeview in the top 100 in the US, it is just begging for a greens renovation and tree removal project. Sam Snead and Jack literally hold the course record here. Unfortunately with limited other local options it gets a ton of play as-is and the current ownership doesn’t seem motivated to do anything except keep the place open vs reaching its true potential.
