SEVEN OAKS COUNTRY CLUB
🇺🇸 Bakersfield, CA, USA
Designed by Robert Muir Graves

Seven Oaks Country Club's Lakes course sits in Bakersfield, in California's Central Valley, where the flat agricultural landscape and warm climate shape the golfing experience. Robert Muir Graves designed the course, bringing his characteristic Northern California sensibilities to the region's distinct environment. Graves, who practiced primarily in the mid-to-late twentieth century, built a substantial portfolio of courses throughout California and the West, often working with terrain and water features to create strategic interest on relatively level sites.
The Lakes course takes its name from the water hazards that figure prominently in the routing, a common Graves approach to adding definition and challenge to valley floor properties. The layout likely incorporates these lakes both as visual landmarks and as tactical elements that require careful club selection and course management. The flat topography allows for generous fairway corridors, though water placement and bunkering provide the primary defense. Tree-lined holes are typical of Central Valley courses, offering shade and framing in an otherwise open landscape.
Seven Oaks serves as a traditional private country club for the Bakersfield community, providing a social and recreational hub in a city known more for agriculture and energy industries than resort golf. The club offers members a retreat from the valley heat during much of the year, with the Lakes course representing the kind of established, member-focused layout common to mid-century California country clubs. The course reflects its era and region—functional, playable, and designed for regular member enjoyment rather than championship competition.
