Laguna at Millennium Golf Course

The Millennium Golf Course in Vilamoura opened in 2000 as part of the Algarve's extensive golf resort development. American architect Joe Lee, known for his work in Florida and other resort destinations, designed the course to take advantage of the region's rolling terrain and Mediterranean climate. The layout occupies land slightly inland from the coast, where the topography provides more natural movement than the flatter sites closer to the sea.

The routing works through umbrella pines and cork oaks characteristic of the Algarve landscape, with fairways that follow the existing contours rather than impose dramatic earthwork. Lee incorporated water features on several holes, a design element he employed frequently in his Florida projects, though here they serve both strategic and aesthetic purposes in a drier climate. The course measures over 6,800 yards from the championship tees and presents a balance of risk-reward opportunities and straightforward holes.

Vilamoura has developed into one of Europe's largest golf resort complexes, with multiple courses serving international visitors and seasonal residents. The Millennium course operates as part of this network, sharing practice facilities and clubhouse amenities with neighboring layouts. The region's mild winters and reliable playing conditions have made it a popular destination for northern European golfers seeking year-round access. The course hosts occasional regional tournaments and corporate events but functions primarily as a resort facility rather than a championship venue.
