ONYRIA PALMARES GOLF RESORT
🇵🇹 Lagos, Algarve, PT
Designed by Robert Trent Jones, Jr.
Onyria Palmares Golf Resort sits on dramatic clifftop terrain overlooking the Atlantic Ocean near Lagos in Portugal's western Algarve. Robert Trent Jones, Jr. designed the course to take full advantage of the coastal setting, routing holes across rolling terrain that transitions from elevated headlands with ocean views down through valleys planted with olive, almond, and carob trees. The property occupies land with agricultural history, and Jones preserved much of the natural landscape character while creating a layout that moves between exposed coastal sections and more sheltered inland passages.
The routing divides into distinct zones based on elevation and exposure. Several holes play along the clifftops with the Atlantic as backdrop, while others descend into protected valleys where Mediterranean vegetation provides a contrasting environment. The course features significant elevation changes throughout, and the wind off the ocean becomes a major factor on the higher ground. Jones incorporated strategic bunkering and used the natural contours to create variety in approach shots and green complexes.
The resort operates as a destination facility with accommodations and dining on site, serving both international visitors and golfers from Lisbon and other Portuguese cities. Lagos itself is a historic port town with connections to Portugal's Age of Discovery, and the surrounding coastline features the distinctive rock formations and beaches characteristic of this section of the Algarve. The course remains open year-round, benefiting from the region's mild winter climate that makes southern Portugal a popular golf destination during the European off-season.
