La Tourette Course
Staten Island, NY, USA

La Tourette, laid out across the rolling hills of Staten Island, is a public testament to early 20th-century golf course design. Its terrain, while not dramatic, presents a traditional parkland challenge, rewarding strategic play more than brute force. The course, designed by Tom Bendelow, is characterized by its mature trees, subtly undulating fairways, and smaller, classic green complexes, requiring golfers to consider placement off the tee and approach shots that favor accuracy. Bendelow, known for his prolific work across the country, imbued La Tourette with a strategic depth that continues to test golfers of all abilities. The course's modest length is offset by its demanding par-4s and strategically placed bunkers, forcing players to carefully navigate each hole rather than simply bombing away. A notable feature is the relatively tight routing, creating a sense of intimacy and encouraging a walking-friendly experience. While La Tourette hasn't hosted any major professional championships, it remains a vital part of the local golfing landscape. The club has fostered a passionate and diverse membership, drawn to the course's accessibility and unpretentious atmosphere. After a round, many players gather at the clubhouse known for its hearty Italian American food, cementing the club's status as a true community hub.

Not a bad public layout, just no thought on many of the tee shots. Most of the greens are circles and relatively flat. Greens were slow but pretty smooth overall.
