REAL CLUB DE GOLF LA HERRERIA
🇪🇸 San Lorenzo de El Escorial, Comunidad de Madrid, ES
Designed by Pepe Gancedo
La Herreria occupies a distinctive setting in the foothills of the Sierra de Guadarrama, approximately fifty kilometers northwest of Madrid near the historic town of San Lorenzo de El Escorial. Designed by Pepe Gancedo and opened in 1991, the course takes its name from the surrounding La Herreria forest, a protected woodland area that has served as royal hunting grounds since the sixteenth century. The property sits at roughly 1,000 meters elevation, where the terrain transitions from Mediterranean lowlands to mountain pine forest.
Gancedo routed the course through varied topography that includes granite outcroppings, mature oak and pine stands, and natural elevation changes that provide both strategic interest and views toward the Escorial monastery complex. The layout incorporates the existing landscape features rather than imposing dramatic earthwork, with several holes playing across or around the site's characteristic rock formations. Water comes into play on multiple holes, and the design asks players to navigate both elevation and the natural corridors created by the forest.
The club operates within the broader context of Madrid's golf community, where courses benefit from the region's dry climate and extended playing season. La Herreria's mountain proximity means cooler temperatures than the capital and occasional weather variability. The course has hosted regional and national amateur competitions, serving as a venue for Spanish golf federation events over the years.
