The course was designed by Dave Thomas with consultation from Robert Trent Jones Sr., bringing together the British architect's strategic sensibilities and the American's characteristic emphasis on bold bunkering and water features. The layout reflects the collaborative nature of its design, with holes that demand both accuracy and course management across varied terrain.

The routing makes use of the property's natural contours and mature vegetation, with fairways framed by pine, cork oak, and eucalyptus. Water comes into play on several holes, adding definition and strategic interest to the round. The design incorporates elevated tees and greens that take advantage of views toward the surrounding hills and, on clear days, glimpses of the Mediterranean. Bunkers are positioned to challenge approach shots and frame landing areas in the manner typical of both architects' work from this period.

La Cañada serves as a members' club with visitor access, part of the established golf community in the Sotogrande area. The region's mild climate allows for year-round play, and the course benefits from the mature landscaping that has developed since its opening. It represents a solid example of late-twentieth-century European resort design, blending strategic variety with the aesthetic expectations of the Costa del Sol market.
