L'ANCRESSE GOLF CLUB
🇬🇬 Saint Sampson, Guernsey, GG
Designed by Mackenzie Ross
L'Ancresse occupies a distinctive stretch of common land on the northern tip of Guernsey, where the course shares its terrain with grazing cattle and public footpaths under ancient commoners' rights. Mackenzie Ross laid out the present eighteen-hole routing in the years following World War II, transforming what had been a simpler links into a more complete test while respecting the land's dual-use character. The course runs across L'Ancresse Common, a windswept headland where gorse, rough grasses, and exposed rock define the playing corridors and the English Channel provides a constant backdrop.
The terrain offers genuine links golf with firm turf, natural undulation, and the sort of unpredictable bounces that reward local knowledge. Several holes play along elevated ground with views across the water toward neighboring islands, while others occupy lower ground where the wind can swirl unpredictably. The layout makes full use of the property's natural features—rocky outcrops, ridges, and hollows—without the manicured presentation typical of parkland courses. Grazing animals maintain much of the rough, a traditional practice that reinforces the course's agricultural heritage.
L'Ancresse remains one of the Channel Islands' most accessible courses, with green fees that reflect its status as a municipal facility on common land. The clubhouse is modest, and the atmosphere is informal, shaped by a mix of local members and visitors drawn to the rare combination of authentic links character and the island's unique legal and cultural setting. The course provides a straightforward, honest examination of links golf in a landscape that has changed little over centuries.
