KNOLLWOOD GOLF COURSE
🇺🇸 Granada Hills, CA, USA
Designed by William Francis Bell, William H. Johnson

Knollwood Golf Course sits in Granada Hills in the northern San Fernando Valley, a public facility that has served the Los Angeles area since the mid-twentieth century. The course was designed by William F. Bell and William H. Johnson, two architects who worked extensively throughout Southern California during the post-war expansion of golf in the region. Bell in particular designed or redesigned dozens of courses across the state, many of them municipal layouts built to accommodate the growing demand for accessible public golf.
The routing occupies rolling terrain characteristic of the valley's foothill edges, where the land begins to rise toward the San Gabriel Mountains. The design reflects the practical, straightforward approach common to California public courses of its era—tree-lined fairways, modest elevation changes, and greens that reward accurate approach play without excessive severity. The layout provides a solid test for regular play while remaining approachable for recreational golfers.
Knollwood functions as a neighborhood course in a densely populated part of Los Angeles County, offering tee times and league play to a broad cross-section of local golfers. The setting includes views of the surrounding hills and, on clear days, glimpses of the mountain ranges that frame the valley. The course operates within the typical structure of Southern California municipal golf, balancing conditioning and pace of play with high rounds of traffic throughout the year.
Reviews
A little quirky, but could be a lot quirkier which would be an improvement. It’s fun. It’s also a little unpredictable which is part of the charm for a muni (fliers in the fairway, example.) I’d play here again.
