KINGSBARNS GOLF LINKS
🏴 St. Andrews, Fife, Scotland
Designed by Kyle Phillips

Kingsbarns is a monument to modern links golf, a dramatic reimagining of windswept farmland into a coastal gem. Designed by Kyle Phillips and opening in 2000, the course doesn't possess the centuries of history found at its neighbors, but it compensates with breathtaking views and a boldness rarely seen in traditional links layouts. The open terrain, once tilled fields, now tumbles toward the North Sea, creating a canvas for dramatic elevation changes and holes that hug the coastline with near recklessness. The expansive fairways seem welcoming at first, but errant shots are often punished by deep bunkers and unforgiving rough, a testament to the challenging nature of links golf.
While Kingsbarns lacks the ancient pedigree of some nearby courses, its rapid rise to prominence is undeniable. It’s a frequent co-host of the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship, attracting some of the world's best players each autumn. The course’s playability is a constant point of contention; it favors those who can shape the ball in the wind. The par-3 15th, playing directly over the churning sea, is particularly memorable – and terrifying – when the wind howls.
The ethos at Kingsbarns is one of relaxed luxury. The modern clubhouse eschews stuffiness, preferring instead to create an atmosphere of comfortable enjoyment. While not a membership club, the course fosters a sense of community among its frequent players, drawn back by the challenge and the sheer beauty of the setting. It is a modern course that has quickly become one of the most memorable golf experiences in Scotland.
The course is well-known for its high quality of caddies, and it has produced a few caddies who have been ranked and hired by players on the professional tours.
Reviews
while it does not have the history of other courses in Scotland, the layout and views are some of the best in the country. the stretch of 13, 14, 15 is absolutely incredible
One of the best courses I played on my recent trip to Scotland. Many call this course the Pebble Beach or Cypress Point of Scotland and you can definitely see why. Absolutely breathtaking views and a fairly attackable links course with wide fairways and some challenging approach shots. The wind was the largest defense on the day I played it with gusts up to 35mph
What a setting to place to play a round of golf. Feels perfect to the point of being created in a lab, almost like a photoshopped golf course but still spectacular
Billed as ‘modern links’. Wide fairways make it accessible off the tee. Back nine views are amazing. Fav holes 12 & 15.
Nice club with great hospitality. The golf course lacks the charm and linksy characteristics that make its neighbors great. The setting still makes it a great place to play golf. Not the best value course.
Some of the best views in the world. Doesn’t beat you up, so tourists can really enjoy it. A cool drivable Par 4 (6) and a great stretch of holes along the rocks (12-15). Best pro shop too.
Fantastic course. Very American feel to it. Layout isn’t the most natural, like Whistling Straits, but still a must play.
