CARNE GOLF COURSE
🇮🇪 Belmullet, Mayo, IE
Designed by Ally McIntosh, Jim Engh
Kilmore 9 forms part of the Carne Golf Links complex on the remote Carne Peninsula near Belmullet in County Mayo. The original eighteen holes at Carne, designed by Eddie Hackett and opened in the early 1990s, established the property as one of Ireland's most dramatic links settings. Kilmore 9 was added later through the work of Ally McIntosh and Jim Engh, extending the golfing options across this wild coastal landscape.
The nine holes occupy duneland terrain characteristic of this stretch of the northwest Irish coast, where massive sand hills and natural contours shape the routing. The Carne Peninsula sits exposed to Atlantic weather, and the landscape here retains a raw, elemental quality. McIntosh, known for his work on Scottish links, and Engh, an American architect recognized for bold design features, brought different sensibilities to the project, though the land itself dictates much of the character.
Belmullet and the surrounding Erris region remain among Ireland's most isolated and least developed areas, and Carne reflects that remoteness. The course attracts golfers seeking authentic linksland away from more traveled routes. The combination of Hackett's original routing and the additional nine holes provides variety across a property where the dunes, native grasses, and proximity to the sea define the experience more than any single architectural signature.
