KELSO GOLF CLUB
🏴 Kelso, The Scottish Borders, Scotland
Designed by Ben Sayers, James Braid
Kelso Golf Club sits on the north bank of the River Tweed in the Scottish Borders town of Kelso, a historic market town near the English border. The course occupies rolling parkland with mature trees and views across the river valley toward the Cheviot Hills. Ben Sayers laid out the original nine holes in the early twentieth century, and James Braid later extended the design to eighteen holes, bringing his characteristic strategic bunkering and use of natural contours to the layout.
The routing moves across gently undulating terrain with several holes playing along elevated ground that offers perspective over the surrounding countryside. The River Tweed influences play on certain holes, and the course features a mix of tree-lined fairways and more open stretches where wind becomes a factor. Braid's design philosophy is evident in the placement of hazards that reward accurate positioning and in greens that require thoughtful approach play.
Kelso serves as a traditional members' club in a region rich with golf history, providing a straightforward parkland test without the severity of links golf but with enough movement and strategic interest to engage visiting golfers. The club maintains a welcoming atmosphere typical of Scottish Borders golf clubs, where the game is played in a relaxed setting amid the agricultural and historical landscape of the Borders region. The course offers a representative example of early-to-mid twentieth century Scottish inland design shaped by two respected architects of that era.
