HUALALAI GOLF CLUB
🇺🇸 Kailua-Kona, HI, USA
Designed by Tom Weiskopf

Ke'olu Golf Course at Hualalai Golf Club occupies dramatic volcanic terrain on the Kona Coast of Hawaii's Big Island, designed by Tom Weiskopf and opened in the late 1990s as part of the Four Seasons Resort Hualalai development. The course name translates roughly to "the life" in Hawaiian, reflecting the designer's intent to work within the natural lava flows rather than impose upon them. Weiskopf routed the holes through ancient black lava fields, incorporating the raw volcanic rock into the playing corridors while creating generous fairways and greens that contrast sharply with the surrounding basalt landscape.
The routing moves across relatively flat to gently rolling ground, with the Pacific Ocean visible from several holes along the western edge of the property. Fairways are defined by crushed white coral and lush tropical vegetation that has been established within the lava, creating striking visual contrasts. The course features wide playing corridors suited to resort play, though the volcanic rock presents both aesthetic drama and practical hazard for errant shots. Several holes play along or near the coastline, where trade winds become a significant factor.
Hualalai operates as a private club associated with the resort and residential community, serving members and resort guests. The course reflects Weiskopf's philosophy of minimalist design that emphasizes natural landforms, particularly evident in how the holes navigate through and around the lava formations rather than attempting to reshape the volcanic landscape extensively.
