KANNAMI SPRINGS COUNTRY CLUB
🇯🇵 Kannami, Shizuoka, JP
Designed by Pete Dye
Kannami Springs Country Club occupies rolling terrain in Kannami, a town in eastern Shizuoka Prefecture situated between the resort areas of Atami and Izu. Pete Dye designed the course during his period of work in Japan, bringing his characteristic design philosophy to a landscape that offers views toward Mount Fuji on clear days. The property's natural topography and the region's volcanic geology provide the foundation for a layout that reflects Dye's preference for strategic challenge and visual definition.
The routing moves through varied elevation changes typical of this part of Shizuoka, where forested hillsides and valleys create natural corridors for golf holes. Dye's design incorporates his signature elements—railroad ties, pot bunkers, and angular shaping—adapted to the Japanese setting and integrated with the site's existing contours. Water features appear on several holes, and the bunkering style creates clear visual lines that define playing angles and reward precise shotmaking.
Kannami Springs serves a membership drawn from the greater Tokyo metropolitan area, approximately two hours away by car. The club operates within the Japanese country club tradition, where golf is accompanied by substantial clubhouse amenities and dining facilities. The course represents one of several Dye designs built in Japan during the 1980s and 1990s, a period when American architects were frequently commissioned to create resort and private courses throughout the country's golf development boom.
