THE JEWEL GOLF CLUB
🇺🇸 Lake City, MN, USA
Designed by Hale Irwin

The Jewel Golf Club sits in Lake City, Minnesota, a small town along the western shore of Lake Pepin, a natural widening of the Mississippi River in the southeastern corner of the state. The course was designed by Hale Irwin, the three-time U.S. Open champion who transitioned into golf course architecture after his playing career. Irwin's design work typically emphasizes strategic shot values and playability across different skill levels, drawing on his competitive experience to create courses that reward thoughtful play.
The routing takes advantage of the rolling terrain characteristic of the Mississippi River bluff country, with elevation changes and natural contours shaping the playing corridors. The property offers views of the surrounding agricultural landscape and wooded areas common to this part of Minnesota. Irwin's design philosophy generally favors generous fairways with strategic bunkering and green complexes that present multiple approach options, allowing players to choose risk-reward lines based on their abilities.
Lake City itself is known as the birthplace of waterskiing and serves as a recreational hub for the Lake Pepin area. The Jewel functions as a semi-private facility, welcoming both members and daily-fee play. The course provides a regional golf option in an area where the natural beauty of the river valley and bluff landscape creates a distinctive setting for the game, particularly during the fall months when the hardwood forests display seasonal color.
Reviews
The aesthetics in the fall are incredible. All the colors with the fescue, the bluffs, and the really green course (a little soft) made everything pop more. Think that’s what I appreciated most and would probably struggle to enjoy myself as much on a 90 degree day in the summer. Front nine is awesome. Really good variety and has a lot of half par holes. I don’t love the 4th but it kind of works in the context of the rest of the nine. The back nine is a thorough execution test, which was a nice change of pace compared to what I usually play but I would struggle to play it every day. It felt a little Dyeish in spots where many of the tee shots are set to look more intimidating than it really is. Been awhile since I’ve walked up to tee boxes and realized that I had to sack up and hit a shot. The 260 yard carry to the fairway in 12 into the wind was egregious, but everything else was fair. Probably close to a top 5 public in the state. Really fun place and a little extra special in the fall.
Best bang for your buck course in Minnesota.
