CHAMPIONS GOLF CLUB
🇺🇸 Houston, TX, USA
Designed by George Fazio
Champions Golf Club, nestled in Houston's Champions neighborhood, bears the indelible mark of Jack Burke Jr. and Jimmy Demaret, legends who envisioned a haven for championship golf. The Jackrabbit course, while not often considered a championship venue, presents a challenging, traditional experience. Its design, born from the mid-20th century, sprawls across relatively flat, open terrain where prevailing winds dictate strategy, demanding thoughtful club selection and skillful execution.
Architect Ralph Plummer undertook a refresh of the Jackrabbit in the early 2000s, aiming to modernize the course without sacrificing the intent of the original design. The bunkers, subtly re-contoured, remain a key strategic element, penalizing wayward shots while the firm, fast greens require a deft touch. The course, while not having hosted a major championship, is steeped in the club's rich history and is a member favorite for casual play.
Champions' Jackrabbit is not particularly renowned outside of the region, but the membership takes pride in the course, considering it a pure expression of the game. The clubhouse is rumored to house an impressive collection of golf memorabilia, much of it collected and donated by members across the years. Champions, as a whole, and its two courses represent Houston golf heritage, where the emphasis is squarely on the spirit and camaraderie of the game.
