The course sits at approximately 2,300 feet elevation, offering cooler temperatures than the valley floor and views across the surrounding desert landscape toward distant mountain ranges. Nash, who has designed numerous courses throughout Arizona and the Southwest, routed Ironwood through natural desert terrain characterized by saguaro cacti, rock outcroppings, and native vegetation.

The layout incorporates the rolling topography of the high desert, with elevation changes that provide strategic interest and visual variety throughout the round. Fairways are defined by the contrast between maintained turf and preserved desert areas, requiring players to navigate both the natural landscape and Nash's bunkering.
