INDIAN CANYON GOLF COURSE
🇺🇸 Spokane, WA, USA
Designed by H. Chandler Egan

Indian Canyon Golf Course occupies a dramatic forested canyon on the western edge of Spokane, carved by Hangman Creek through basalt and pine. Designed by H. Chandler Egan and opened in 1935, the course was built as a municipal facility during the Depression era and remains one of the most distinctive public golf courses in the Pacific Northwest. Egan, an accomplished amateur golfer and architect who also designed Pebble Beach Golf Links with Jack Neville, routed the layout to follow the natural contours of the canyon floor and slopes, creating significant elevation changes throughout the round.
The course plays through dense stands of ponderosa pine with fairways that tumble and climb along the canyon terrain. Several holes feature substantial drops from tee to fairway, while others require uphill approaches to elevated greens. The routing takes advantage of the property's natural movement, with doglegs that bend around ridges and greens positioned on plateaus or nestled into hillsides. The narrow, tree-lined character demands accuracy and course management, as errant shots often find steep slopes or heavy rough beneath the pines.
Indian Canyon has hosted numerous regional amateur championships and remains a popular destination for visiting golfers seeking a challenging mountain-style layout within city limits. The course's combination of Egan's strategic design principles and the dramatic topography of the Spokane landscape creates a memorable test that differs markedly from the flatter parkland courses common to many municipal facilities.
