INABU OGM COUNTRY CLUB
🇯🇵 Toyota, Aichi, JP
Designed by Peter Thomson, Kozasa Shozo
Inabu OGM occupies mountainous terrain in the Inabu district of Toyota, a city in Aichi Prefecture better known for automotive manufacturing than golf. The course represents a collaboration between five-time Open Championship winner Peter Thomson and Japanese architect Kozasa Shozo, combining Thomson's strategic design philosophy with local knowledge of the challenging topography. Thomson's work in Japan during the 1970s and 1980s often emphasized playability within dramatic landscapes, and this partnership reflects that approach.
The routing navigates significant elevation changes characteristic of the region's forested highlands, with holes carved through wooded corridors and positioned along ridgelines and valleys. The design requires thoughtful club selection and course management, as the mountainous setting creates both visual intimidation and practical challenges with uneven lies and elevation-adjusted distances. Water features and bunkering provide additional strategic elements on a layout where natural terrain already dictates much of the playing character.
Inabu OGM serves a membership drawn largely from the Toyota metropolitan area and surrounding communities in central Japan. The facility operates within the member-owned golf management company model common in Japanese golf, where OGM (Okinawa Golf Management) oversees operations. The course offers a retreat into mountain scenery distinct from the more urban or coastal golf options elsewhere in Aichi Prefecture, providing a setting where the natural environment remains the dominant feature throughout the round.
