HURTMORE GOLF CLUB
🏴 Hurtmore, Surrey, England
Designed by Clive Clark, Peter Alliss
Hurtmore Golf Club occupies gently rolling parkland in the Surrey countryside near Godalming, roughly five miles south of Guildford. The course was designed by Peter Alliss and Clive Clark and opened in the early 1990s, part of a wave of new golf developments in southern England during that period. Alliss, better known as a television commentator, collaborated with Clark on several courses throughout Britain, typically producing accessible layouts that balance strategic interest with playability for a range of abilities.
The routing moves through mature woodland and open fields, with elevation changes that are modest but sufficient to create variety in stance and perspective. Water features come into play on several holes, and the design incorporates both risk-reward opportunities and more straightforward holes that allow players to recover momentum. The bunkering style reflects the era of construction, with shaped sand hazards that frame landing areas and greenside approaches without excessive penal depth.
Hurtmore functions primarily as a members' club with a local membership base drawn from the surrounding Surrey villages and towns. The clubhouse and facilities support regular club competitions and social golf, typical of proprietary clubs established in the region during the late twentieth century. The course sits within commuting distance of London, part of the broader network of parkland courses that serve golfers across the Home Counties.
Reviews
Bang average track had some horror rounds here over 5 hours long but also had some great rounds at good pace. Such a gettable course if your driver is on. Can’t be more than a 6, 5.6 seems fair.
