HUMEWOOD GOLF CLUB
🇿🇦 Port Elizabeth, Eastern Cape, ZA
Designed by Donald Steel
Humewood Golf Club sits on a narrow strip of land between the Indian Ocean and the Swartkops River estuary in Port Elizabeth, occupying one of the most naturally suited pieces of linksland in South Africa. The course was originally laid out in the early twentieth century, but Donald Steel undertook a significant redesign that refined the routing and strategic qualities while preserving the property's essential links character. The sandy soil, coastal winds, and rolling duneland provide playing conditions more reminiscent of British seaside golf than the parkland layouts common elsewhere in South Africa.
The routing makes full use of the coastal setting, with several holes playing directly along the shoreline and others weaving through dune valleys inland. The wind is a constant factor, changing both direction and intensity throughout the day, which demands adaptability in club selection and shot-making. The turf is firm and fast, encouraging ground game approaches, and the bunkering—both natural-looking pot bunkers and larger strategic hazards—punishes wayward shots while rewarding precise placement.
Humewood has hosted numerous South African championships and remains a regular venue for national amateur competitions. The course is widely regarded as the country's premier links experience and consistently appears in rankings of South Africa's finest layouts. The club maintains a traditional atmosphere, and the coastal location provides a distinctive setting that separates Humewood from the inland championship courses that dominate South African golf.
