HONOLULU COUNTRY CLUB
🇺🇸 Honolulu, HI, USA
Designed by Francis Duane, Arnold Palmer
Honolulu Country Club occupies a hillside site in the Nuuanu Valley, just inland from downtown Honolulu. The course was originally designed by Francis Duane and opened in the early twentieth century, making it one of the oldest private clubs in Hawaii. Arnold Palmer later redesigned the layout, bringing modern strategic elements to a property constrained by steep terrain and limited acreage.
The routing works across sloping ground with significant elevation changes throughout the round. Fairways often cant and tumble, and approach shots frequently play uphill or downhill to greens set into the hillside. The compact nature of the property means holes are routed efficiently, with several playing along ridgelines or across valleys. Views extend over Honolulu and toward the Pacific, though the golf itself demands attention to club selection and ball placement on uneven lies.
Honolulu Country Club maintains a traditional membership culture reflective of the city's business and civic community. The club has hosted regional amateur competitions and serves as a venue for local tournament golf. Its location within the city limits and mature landscaping give it a settled, established character distinct from resort courses elsewhere in the islands. The design challenges players with short but demanding holes where accuracy and course management matter more than length.
