HILTON HEAD NATIONAL GOLF CLUB
🇺🇸 Bluffton, SC, USA
Designed by Gary Player
Hilton Head National stands as a testament to a collaborative vision, a course born from the expertise of two distinct design philosophies. This modern marvel, sculpted into the Lowcountry terrain near Bluffton, South Carolina, presents a compelling blend of playability and challenge. Its relatively open fairways, lined by native grasses and strategic bunkering, offer a deceptively forgiving appearance, yet demand thoughtful club selection and precise approach shots to navigate its subtly undulating greens.
Gary Player's initial routing was refined and enhanced by the renowned Bobby Weed, resulting in a layout that favors those who can shape the ball and strategically manage their game. While not known for hosting major championships, Hilton Head National has been a fixture in the regional golf scene, hosting numerous amateur events and serving as a popular venue for players seeking a well-conditioned and enjoyable round.
The club's relaxed atmosphere and welcoming membership foster a sense of camaraderie among locals and visitors alike. While Hilton Head Island steals much of the limelight, Hilton Head National offers an accessible and engaging golfing experience just a short drive away. Many members often joke that it's the best kept secret in the area, a place where the pressure of the island scene melts away, replaced by the simple joy of a well-played round.
Reviews
Cool course, good layout
Hilton Head National is one of those courses I always look forward to playing. It’s got that perfect mix of fun and challenge without ever feeling over the top. The course is a split design — the front nine by Bobby Weed and the back by Gary Player — and you can really feel the contrast between the two styles as you make the turn. Both nines flow nicely and are always kept in great shape. The greens are a blast — plenty of movement to keep things interesting but never too penal. The real highlight here, though, is the massive double green on hole18. It’s such a cool feature and makes for an awesome finishing stretch. Another thing I love about Hilton Head National is the open, natural feel. There aren’t houses lining every fairway, which gives it that peaceful Lowcountry vibe that’s getting harder to find. Last time I played, they were starting some development nearby, but thankfully it didn’t seem like it would take away from the course experience. The practice setup is solid too — a nice range and putting green to get dialed in before the round. Pace of play has always been great when I’ve been out there, and it just feels like one of those courses you could play over and over without getting tired of it.
