HILLDALE GOLF CLUB
🇺🇸 Hoffman Estates, IL, USA
Designed by Robert Trent Jones Sr.

Hilldale Golf Club sits in Hoffman Estates, a northwest suburb of Chicago, and was designed by Robert Trent Jones Sr., who shaped the course during the mid-twentieth century when his influence on American golf architecture was at its peak. Jones brought his characteristic design philosophy to this Illinois landscape, emphasizing strategic bunkering, large greens with multiple pin positions, and hazards positioned to challenge golfers at various skill levels. The routing takes advantage of the relatively flat terrain typical of the region, with Jones creating visual interest and strategic variety through his trademark use of water features and sculpted earthwork.
The course reflects Jones's belief that a design should reward good shots while penalizing poor ones proportionally. Greens are typically elevated and well-defended, requiring precise approach play, while fairways offer sufficient width for the average golfer but demand accuracy from better players seeking optimal angles. Water comes into play on several holes, adding both aesthetic appeal and strategic consequence to club selection and shot execution.
Hilldale serves a suburban membership base and operates as a private club in the competitive Chicago golf market. The facility has maintained its Jones design through the decades, preserving the architectural intent while adapting maintenance practices to modern standards. The course provides a solid example of Jones's work in the Midwest, where his designs are less numerous than in other parts of the country but demonstrate his ability to create engaging golf on varied terrain.
Reviews
Terrible pace of play. Condition hit or miss, but it’s a gettable course. No matter the day it seems like every group is taking 90 seconds over each shot. Also be careful navigating the parking lot, drivers are iffy.
Conditions were fine. Awful layout. No thanks!
Robert Trent Jones design - childhood high school course so I’ve spent plenty of time here. The front 9 is a super cool design. A little crowded at parts but the scenery is great. Feels like they have kind of let go of the back 9. The greens haven’t been great in quite some time. It’s a shame because its a classic old muni in the Chicago suburbs. Still an average-above average muni
