Highlands/Marshwood at RTJ Golf Trail at Highland Oaks

The Highlands and Marshwood courses at Highland Oaks form part of Alabama's Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail, a statewide network of public-access facilities designed by Jones and his associates in the 1990s. Roger Rulewich, Jones's longtime senior design associate, collaborated on the project. Highland Oaks opened in 1993 as one of the Trail's original sites, located in the Wiregrass region of southeastern Alabama near Dothan. The property encompasses rolling terrain with stands of pine and hardwood, typical of the area's landscape.

The Highlands nine plays across more elevated ground with moderate changes in elevation, while the Marshwood nine occupies lower-lying areas where water features and wetlands come into play more frequently. Both nines reflect the Trail's signature design philosophy: generous fairways that accommodate recreational players, large undulating greens with multiple pin positions, and strategic bunkering that rewards thoughtful course management. The layouts can be combined with the property's third nine, the Magnolia, to create various eighteen-hole configurations.

Highland Oaks represents the Trail's mission to provide championship-caliber golf at accessible rates throughout Alabama. The courses stretch to considerable yardage from the back tees but offer multiple forward options. The facility includes a practice area and clubhouse typical of the Trail's other locations, serving both local residents and traveling golfers exploring the network's various sites across the state.
