PRIMLAND RESORT
🇺🇸 Meadows of Dan, VA, USA
Designed by Donald Steel

Highland Course at Primland, nestled in the Virginia highlands, earns its reputation one demanding shot at a time. Its location atop the Blue Ridge Mountains sets it apart, a rare elevation for a golf course in the eastern United States, where the ball flies further and the views stretch forever.
Designed by Donald Steel in the late 2000s, the Highland course capitalizes on the dramatic terrain. The bentgrass fairways tumble and twist across the mountain landscape, demanding strategic shot-making and creative recovery shots. The routing utilizes the natural elevation changes to create memorable holes, some featuring blind shots over natural rock outcroppings and others showcasing panoramic vistas of the surrounding valleys. While it may not host professional championships, its stunning setting and challenging layout have garnered a devoted following among discerning golfers.
The Highland Course offers an experience that transcends the typical golf outing, and while it may not rank among the nation’s most celebrated courses, its unique setting and challenging design make it a memorable destination. It is the kind of place where golfers feel a sense of accomplishment simply for navigating the course successfully, as well as a sense of calm due to being on top of the world.
Reviews
Most mountain golf courses are built in a valley surrounded by mountains, but Primland is the opposite, it's built on top of the mountain with some incredible views throughout the round. It took us 35 minutes to get from the gate at the bottom of the mountain to the top, which is so cool. The course itself is challenging mainly because of how tight it is off the tee. If you keep your ball in play, it is rather scoreable! Primland is in the absolute middle of nowhere, but very well worth the trip if you enjoy mountain golf!
