RTJ GOLF TRAIL AT SILVER LAKES
🇺🇸 Glencoe, AL, USA
Designed by Robert Trent Jones Sr., Roger Rulewich

The Heartbreaker and Backbreaker courses at Silver Lakes form part of the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail, the ambitious public golf development that opened across Alabama in the 1990s. Robert Trent Jones Sr., working with senior design associate Roger Rulewich, created these layouts on rolling terrain near Glencoe in northeast Alabama. The Silver Lakes complex features four distinct nines that can be combined into different eighteen-hole configurations, with Heartbreaker and Backbreaker representing one such pairing. The property sits in the Appalachian foothills, offering elevation changes and natural topography that distinguish it from flatter sites elsewhere on the Trail.
Jones designed the Trail courses with championship length and strategic challenge in mind, incorporating his signature large greens, extensive bunkering, and water features that demand precise shotmaking. The routing at Silver Lakes takes advantage of the wooded, undulating landscape, with holes playing through corridors of hardwoods and pines. Multiple tee boxes allow the courses to accommodate players of varying abilities, though the back tees present substantial tests of length and accuracy.
The RTJ Golf Trail operates as a public golf network managed by a state pension fund, making championship-caliber design accessible at daily-fee rates. Silver Lakes includes lodging and practice facilities that support both casual visitors and competitive events. The complex has hosted regional amateur tournaments and qualifiers, serving as a tournament venue within the Trail's broader network of courses across Alabama.
