HEADFORT GOLF CLUB
🇮🇪 Kells, Meath, IE
Designed by Christy O'Connor Jr.
The Headfort Championship course at Headfort Golf Club in Kells, County Meath, was designed by Christy O'Connor Jr. and opened in 2000. It represents a modern parkland layout set within the historic Headfort Estate, which has been home to golf since 1928 when the club's original Old Course was established. O'Connor Jr., one of Ireland's most prolific course architects, created a championship-length test that takes advantage of the estate's mature woodland and rolling terrain.
The routing moves through avenues of beech, oak, and chestnut trees, with the River Blackwater coming into play on several holes. The design features generous fairways that reward accurate driving, while the approach shots demand precision to well-defended greens. Water hazards and strategic bunkering characterize the layout, which can stretch beyond 7,000 yards from the championship tees. The course incorporates both open parkland sections and more enclosed, tree-lined corridors that create variety in playing conditions.
Headfort Golf Club maintains both the Championship course and the shorter Old Course on the estate grounds, which sit adjacent to Headfort House, a significant Georgian mansion. The club offers a traditional Irish golf club atmosphere, with the Championship course serving as the primary competitive venue. The course has hosted regional amateur events and qualifiers, taking advantage of its length and conditioning to provide a thorough examination of all aspects of the game.
