HAZELTINE NATIONAL GOLF CLUB
🇺🇸 Chaska, MN, USA
Designed by Rees Jones, Robert Trent Jones Sr.
Hazeltine National Golf Club opened in 1962 as a Robert Trent Jones Sr. design on rolling terrain southwest of Minneapolis in Chaska, Minnesota. The course was conceived by local businessman Totton Heffelfinger with the explicit goal of creating a championship venue capable of hosting major professional and amateur competitions. Jones routed the layout across varied topography that includes natural elevation changes, mature hardwood forests, and wetlands, with Hazeltine Lake coming into play on several holes. The design reflects Jones Sr.'s characteristic emphasis on strategic bunkering, large greens with substantial contours, and demanding length from the championship tees.
The course has hosted an extensive roster of national championships, including the U.S. Open in 1970 and 1991, the PGA Championship in 2002 and 2009, the U.S. Women's Open in 1966 and 1977, and the U.S. Senior Open in 1983 and 1993. Hazeltine also served as the venue for the 2016 Ryder Cup. Following the 1970 U.S. Open, the course underwent significant modifications by Rees Jones in the early 1990s to address criticism and modernize the design for contemporary championship play. These changes included rerouting several holes, adjusting green complexes, and enhancing strategic options throughout the layout.
The club maintains a private membership and operates as a year-round facility despite Minnesota's northern climate. Hazeltine's tournament pedigree and Jones pedigree make it one of the most prominent championship courses in the upper Midwest.
Reviews
Is it my favorite golf course? No. I'm not a giant fan of Robert Trent Jones, but it's playable and can be interesting. There's a few very good holes. The rest of them are very Trent Jones. It's a championship golf course for sure.
Always a great experience. Very knowledgeable caddies. Tough track.
