HAWKTREE GOLF CLUB
🇺🇸 Bismarck, ND, USA
Designed by Jim Engh

Hawktree Golf Club opened in 2004 as Jim Engh's first design in North Dakota, bringing his distinctive architectural style to the northern Great Plains. The course occupies rolling terrain on the western edge of Bismarck, where the landscape transitions from prairie to the more rugged topography characteristic of the Missouri River valley region. Engh utilized the natural elevation changes and native grasses to create a layout that stands apart from traditional Midwestern parkland designs.
The routing features dramatic contours and bold bunkering that reflect Engh's signature approach to golf course architecture. Fairways move through corridors of native fescue and wildflowers, with several holes offering views across the surrounding prairie landscape. The design incorporates significant elevation changes uncommon in North Dakota golf, with tee shots from elevated positions and approach shots to greens set at varying levels. Engh's characteristic use of angular bunker shapes and strategic hazard placement requires thoughtful course management rather than simply overpowering the layout.
Hawktree operates as a semi-private facility and has become a notable destination for golfers in the upper Midwest seeking a course with more dramatic terrain and design features than typically found in the region. The club serves both members and daily-fee players, providing access to Engh's unconventional design philosophy in a state where golf architecture tends toward more traditional forms. The course represents an example of how contemporary architects have brought varied design styles to markets previously dominated by conventional layouts.
Reviews
Black bunkers, elevation changes, and a beautiful setting makes this place look pretty striking visually. I’m not sure if any of the golf holes are that good, but it is fun!
