HAWK'S LANDING GOLF COURSE
🇺🇸 Yucca Valley, CA, USA
Designed by Cary Bickler, Roscoe Smith
Hawks Landing isn’t whispered about in golf circles, nor does it claim ancestral ties to the game, but in the sun-baked landscape of Yucca Valley, it presents a satisfying challenge to high desert golf. Its alternate tees offer a distinctly different test – a concentrated burst of elevation changes and shifting perspectives on an otherwise straightforward layout.
Originally conceived to offer a more accessible game amidst the rugged terrain, Hawk’s Landing plays as a modern course where the desert flora and fauna meet the fairways at every turn. The alternate tees introduce tighter angles and strategic risk-reward calculations, especially on the par-4s that suddenly demand a draw or fade to navigate strategically placed bunkers. While the course isn't known for any singular architect or lore of tournaments, the design favors a well-placed tee shot over brute force.
The spirit of Hawk’s Landing resides in its laid-back atmosphere. Local lore has it that the 19th hole is a gathering place where desert dwellers share stories of errant shots and unexpected bounces, all while savoring the club's surprisingly good fish tacos – a local favorite as unexpected as a birdie on the challenging 16th.
