Ikaho Kokusai Country Club

Haruna-Ikaho is an 18-hole course located in Shibukawa, in Japan's Gunma Prefecture, designed by Mitsuaki Kobayashi. The course sits in the mountainous region northwest of Tokyo, near the base of Mount Haruna, an area known for its volcanic topography and hot spring resorts. The terrain here provides natural elevation changes and views across the surrounding highlands, characteristics common to courses built in this part of central Honshu. Kobayashi, active during Japan's golf course construction boom in the latter half of the twentieth century, designed numerous layouts across the country. His work typically reflects the adaptation of golf architecture to Japan's varied and often challenging terrain, incorporating slopes and natural contours into the routing. At Haruna-Ikaho, the design follows the contours of the land, with holes that move through forested areas and open sections where the mountain landscape becomes visible. The course serves members and visitors at Ikaho Kokusai Country Club, part of the network of country clubs that developed in Japan as golf grew in popularity from the 1960s onward. The region around Ikaho is a traditional resort area, and the club reflects the integration of golf into Japan's leisure culture.
