HANNASTOWN GOLF CLUB
🇺🇸 Greensburg, PA, USA
Designed by Emil Loeffler

Hannastown Golf Club sits in the rolling terrain east of Greensburg in Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania. The course was designed by Emil Loeffler, a prolific regional architect who shaped numerous layouts across western Pennsylvania during the early-to-mid twentieth century. Loeffler typically worked with the natural contours of the land, and Hannastown reflects the characteristic topography of the area—modest elevation changes, tree-lined fairways, and a mix of open and wooded corridors that define strategy off the tee.
The routing takes advantage of the property's natural movement, with holes that bend around hillsides and play across gentle valleys. Greens are generally modest in size and contour, consistent with the design sensibilities of Loeffler's era, and require accurate approach play. The course serves as a traditional private club for members in the Greensburg area, offering a straightforward test of golf without excessive length or modern embellishments.
Hannastown represents the kind of community-centered club that has anchored small-city golf in Pennsylvania for generations. The layout provides a familiar challenge for regular play, with enough variety in hole length and direction to reward course knowledge and thoughtful shot-making. It remains a quiet fixture in the regional golf landscape, maintaining the character of its original design while serving its membership.
Reviews
Hannastown, like many traditional western PA layouts, is compiled of fast greens and strategic tee shots. The course feels very old fashioned with a subtle clubhouse and a practice green that shares space with the 18th green. A stout set of par 3s will have you hitting a different club each time. The 2nd hole is a mere flip wedge while the 11th can play 220+. The 3 par 5s are the weakest aspect of the course and while they are not "bad" holes by any means they lack the same energy the rest of the course has. The par 4s make up for this drop in quality with an excellent set of holes that test your game from shot making to decision making. The stretch of par 4s [Holes 3,4,5] are the best of the bunch using a creek running through the property expertly. This is a great members course with interesting questions asked on nearly everyhole. The conditions were very strong and its not a course I would turn down an invite to.
Hannastown is an absolute gem of a course. It’s the type of place that seems incredible to be a member at. Friendly staff and awesome course. Additionally, there are a lot of blind shots or landing areas that playing there every day would help in a match versus a guest. Bonus points for having the 18th green being a massive green that is also the practice putting green. My only real knock on the club is that the range is about a 7 minute cart ride from the club house. In my opinion the front 9 is the more fun of the two nines with more diversity in hole designs but the back 9 is more difficult. I thought that every hole on the front 9 was so enjoyable. One of the best holes on the entire course in my opinion is the 2nd hole par 3 that was 115 yards playing down hill to like 100 yards. You would think this hole would be easy and straight forward, but you can get into trouble so easily. The bunkering and green complex was so good. Aside from the great par 3s on the front I thought the course architect did an excellent job of using a winding river to make holes so much more unique and difficult. The back 9 is super unique and difficult. I think it might be the first time I ever played in order a par 3-5-3-5-3. While this might sound repetitive each hole faced a different way and was a different yardage so it required you to hit different shots. The weakest part of the course to me was holes 16-17-18. They felt like they were just trying to get you back to the club house. I will say the day we played Im pretty sure the pin position was illegal. I had a comfy two putt but people who hit their approach on the wrong side of the hole really struggled. I want to give a special shoutout to whoever chose pin placements and has done maintenance on the greens. They rolled so pure and the pin placements were so good. Would love to get back their again to play.
