Baldock designed the original layout in the early 1960s, during a period when he was actively shaping courses throughout the Pacific Northwest and California. Baldock's work typically emphasized playability for a range of skill levels while incorporating the natural contours of a site, and Hangman Valley reflects this approach with moderate elevation changes and tree-lined fairways characteristic of inland Northwest golf. Rick Phelps later contributed renovations and updates to the course, refining certain aspects of the design while maintaining the fundamental routing.
