GUYAN GOLF AND COUNTRY CLUB
🇺🇸 Huntington, WV, USA
Designed by Herbert Strong

Guyan Golf and Country Club sits in the hills above Huntington, West Virginia, along the banks of the Guyan River in the southwestern corner of the state. The course was designed by Herbert Strong, a prolific architect of the early twentieth century who worked extensively throughout the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast. Strong, a contemporary of Donald Ross and A.W. Tillinghast, built more than 150 courses during his career, often on rolling terrain that allowed for strategic variety and natural movement in the land.
The layout at Guyan reflects Strong's characteristic approach to routing across undulating property. The course occupies terrain that transitions between river bottomland and wooded hillsides, creating elevation changes and framing that give the design both variety and natural definition. Strong favored green sites that rewarded accurate approach play and often incorporated subtle contours that made putting a test of touch and reading.
Guyan serves as a traditional private club in the Huntington area, offering a classic parkland setting for its membership. The course has remained a fixture in the regional golf community for decades, maintaining its role as a venue for local competition and member play. The club provides a window into early American course architecture in a part of the country where Strong's work helped establish the game during its expansion in the 1920s.
